There are a number of reasons why someone would consider undergoing plastic surgery in order to improve the overall shape, contour, and appearance of his or her body. Sometimes there are excess pockets of fat that will not go away even with strenuous exercise and a healthy diet. After a substantial amount of weight loss–like the weight loss that is experienced following bariatric surgery–loose skin may not tighten and conform to a person’s slimmer frame. Even pregnancy can affect body contour, causing stretch marks, loose skin, and other body changes.

Thankfully there are a number of plastic surgery options available to people who seek to improve their body contour. Below is a brief rundown of the most common body contouring surgeries performed. Your eligibility for these surgeries and the combination of body contouring surgeries that are right for you will be determined in a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon.

One of the most common body contouring surgeries is liposuction. Liposuction is able to remove stubborn pockets of fat from the body. During the surgical procedure, the cosmetic surgeon uses a thin instrument called a cannula to suction out fat from the patient’s body. Liposuction can b performed in the abdominal region, buttocks, thighs, torso, arms, neck, and even certain parts of the face.

Another common body contouring surgery is an an abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure that targets the abdominal region. During the procedure, the surgeon will make incisions along the lower abdomen from hip bone to hip bone, extract excess fat, and excise excess tissue. A tummy tuck is often performed in conjunction with liposuction in order to ensure all pockets of stubborn fat are removed.

In addition to abdominoplasty and liposuction, other body contouring procedures include arms lift, thigh lights, and buttock lifts. In many cases, when a person has lost a lot of weight from bariatric surgery, a body lift is performed. A body lift is a series of lifts designed to address body contouring issues in different parts of the body. A body lift is usually performed in several stages and not all at once.

Body contouring surgery is a form of cosmetic surgery that is performed by a professional, licensed surgeon, on a person who either desires or requires it. Generally speaking, such surgery targets a specific area or part of the body that requires modifications or cosmetic refining. Anatomical parts that can be modified range from the arms to the buttocks and abdominal area.

There are several different variants of body contouring surgery including liposuction, breast augmentation/reduction, tummy tucks, and arm/thigh lifts. Regardless of the variant, the main goal is to remedy, augment or decrease an abnormality or aesthetical deformity that causes the individual physical or psychological malaise.

Body Contouring Surgery: Its variants and specific proceedings

Liposuction: Liposuction is one of the most common and popular forms of body contouring surgery on the market. It consists of draining out globs of fatty deposits from the patient’s body using a suction device that functions similarly to the common vacuum. Occasionally, lipids (fatty substances) are converted into a liquid state using a device called a ULA, or the fat cells may be liquidized using an ultrasound assisted lipoplasty. The liquefied fat cells are then drained from the punctured orifice. The procedure, as a stand-alone, generally takes two hours to complete and is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Breast Lifts: Breast lifting is a common surgical procedure most often performed on women; however, it can be performed on men as well, more specifically those who have experienced dramatic weight loss. As women age, many notice unflattering changes to their breasts (i.e., sagging) – thanks to gravity. A body-altering procedure such as a breast lift can reverse gravity’s effects. To perform a breast lift, the surgeon extracts excess skin and fatty deposits from the patient’s breasts and then tightens the surrounding tissue. As a result, the breasts acquire a firmer, more youthful appearance. A breast lift procedure can take approximately three hours, requires general anesthesia, and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Tummy Tucks: A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a popular form of body contouring surgery. The procedure is recommended for people who have accumulated excess skin around the abdominal area, often due to the rapid loss of excess weight in a short period of time through exercise, dieting, or liposuction, and in some cases, due to postpartum residue. To conduct a tummy tuck, the surgeon will remove the excess skin in the middle lower section, stretch the remaining skin, create a new naval when necessary, and then suture the area. Depending on the extent of work necessary, the surgery can take from three to five hours to complete. The results consist of a smoother, firmer, flatter abdomen, and the disappearance of unsightly stretch marks.

Arm and Thigh Lifts: Arm lifts or brachioplasty is a form of body contouring surgery whereby the shape of the upper arms is reconstructed. It is performed to eliminate excess skin and fat in the region of the upper arm and arm pit. The skin is lifted and excess skin is removed. The area, including the muscle, is then tightened to give the arm a firmer appearance. Thigh lifts or thighplasty is a similar body contouring procedure in which excess skin is removed from the area of the thighs and buttocks. As a result, the region is tightened, leaving behind a more attractive, firmer thigh area. Both arm lifts and thigh lifts vary in terms of the length of time needed for the surgery: the more work required, the longer the surgery will take.

Body Contouring Surgery: Who is Eligible?

Body contouring surgery is recommended for men and women who want to have a part of their body refined or modified via cosmetic surgery. Many of the candidates have developed sagging skin, stretch marks, wrinkles, and drooping or flabby buttocks, breasts, thighs, arms etc., due to excessive loss of body fat through dieting, rigorous exercise, and/or gastric bypass surgery.

Most patients desire to reshape their bodies in order to be more attractive, thereby feeling more youthful and happy about themselves. Ergo, the clientele can range from women who have been pregnant and now want to reshape their postpartum bodies, to men who suffer from gynecomastia (the development of large, female-like breasts).

People with psychological disorders and young persons are generally not eligible for body contouring surgery because of inherent risks (i.e, depression over one’s physique) or the malevolent ramifications of altering a still-developing and maturing body (i.e., children and those in pubertal growth).

Body Contouring After Bariatric Surgery is in Demand in Manhattan, New York

September 28, 2004 (PRWEB) September 29, 2004

Society of Plastic Surgeons more than 52,000 body contouring procedures were performed for massive weight loss patients in 2003. These procedures include buttock lifts, thigh lifts, breast lifts, upper arm lifts and tummy tucks. “I am seeing an increase in demand for post-bariatric body contouring after weight loss”, remarks board-certified plastic surgeon Douglas M. Senderoff, MD who practices plastic surgery in Manhattan and Westchester, New York. In addition, these patients may also be candidates for other cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and facelift due to the excessive amounts of sagging skin after tremendous weight-loss. According to Dr. Senderoff the surgery should be performed at around one year after the weight loss procedure or when the patient’s weight is stable for at least 3 months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 27% of Americans qualify as obese today as compared to only 15% in 1980. The National Institute of Health considers individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above to be morbidly obese. A BMI of 40 is equivalent to a 6 foot man weighing 294 lbs. This translates into roughly 6 million Americans with morbid obesity. Many Americans are undergoing surgical treatment for obesity including laparoscopic banding and gastric bypass surgery. Successful patients will lose around 100 lbs within 18-24 months of surgery. These patients are left with excess sagging skin requiring body contouring by qualified plastic surgeons.

The American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) projects that more than 144,000 patients will have bariatric surgery in 2004 compared to the 103,000 and 67,000 patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2003 and 2002, respectively. The ASPS predicts this increase in weight loss surgery will lead to a 36 percent increase in body contouring operations in 2004.

At this time there is no clear answer whether post-bariatric surgical body contouring is medically necessary or cosmetic. Some insurers will provide coverage for the various lift procedures while others will deny coverage deeming the surgery as not medically necessary. Dr. Senderoff advises patients to check with their insurance company and ask whether their policy covers body contouring after weight loss. The insurance company will usually require medical notes and photos prior to authorizing surgery.

“The satisfaction rate after post-bariatric body contouring surgery is tremendous”, says Dr Senderoff. “My patients are happy to get rid of all that extra skin after losing all their extra weight. It seems as if body contouring after weight loss or bariatric surgery is the icing on the cake for my clients.”

Plastic surgery centers that fail state standards still allowed to accept patients
Patchwork rules permit facilities to operate without a state license. Private accreditation agencies don’t have to release records of complaints and offices that lose accreditation can quickly be certified by another agency. Two years ago Maria Garcia, a 39-year-old mother of five, came to a suburban office park in Anaheim Hills for outpatient plastic surgery. By day’s end, she had bled to death …

Smart Lipo: After the Surgery

Any time someone commits to having surgery done, it is important that they understand the recovery that will be involved. Even though smart lipo has a short recovery time, it is still necessary for patients to know what to expect. By going into the procedure with the knowledge of what to expect, people are able to have the surgery done without experiencing any surprises.

People who are prepared for surgery tend to be happier with the results. That is because they were able to go in having realistic expectations. In order to ensure you are as happy with your surgery as possible, mentally prepare yourself so you will know exactly what to expect when you get smart lipo.

After the procedure, patients are taken into a recovery room so the local anesthesia can wear off. Typically, patients will not have to stay in this room for long at all. In most cases, patients are sent home in as little as an hour after surgery.

During this time, patients will be monitored in order to make sure everything went smoothly. Then, as the effects of the anesthesia begin to wear off, they will get to prepare to go home.

When you are sent home, you are going to be given compression bandages. These bandages are important for several reasons. One, they will help with your recovery. They will work to keep the skin smooth so you will be able to get the best results. Also, they will help keep blood clots from forming. You want to make sure you use your compression bandages as instructed.

In most cases, you will also leave with a prescription for pain medication. Even though you will not feel the same amount of pain as you would with traditional liposuction, you might want to take some medication to alleviate any discomfort that might occur from the procedure.

You are also going to leave with instructions that must be followed precisely. The instructions will take your individual needs into consideration and they will include what you can and cannot do, and what will need to be done in order to prevent infection

After you have been home for a week, you can expect the swelling to leave the areas you had the procedure done on. At that point, you will be able to see the results. You will be able to look at individual areas of the body and see the amount of fat that was removed.

In most cases, people can go back to a physical lifestyle in two weeks after getting the smart lipo procedure done. They will probably feel capable of running and working out before the end of the two week period, but it is suggested they wait two weeks in order to heal completely before working out.

The recovery for smart lipo is significantly less than it is for traditional lipo. However, it is important to still understand what you will need to expect. Whenever you go into a procedure, you want to have all of the information possible so you will not have any surprises afterwords.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery

Recent developments in the field of cosmetic surgery have led to growing societal acceptance. Still, common misconceptions about cosmetic surgery continue to proliferate our view. The following addresses common myths about cosmetic surgery in an endeavor to develop a better understanding for its practice.

There is No Difference Between Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery falls under a category of plastic surgery. The name plastic surgery was coined in reference to the Greek term “plastikos,” which means to shape. Plastic surgery is also reconstructive. Both cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery achieve similar goals through restoring confidence and improving appearance.

Any Surgeon Can Perform Cosmetic Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon is a doctor in a specialized field. Additionally, many cosmetic surgeons specialize in a specific area of that field. Some surgeons may have better expertise in breast augmentation, while others focus on facial plastic surgery.

Just as with all doctors, choose your cosmetic surgeon carefully. Consider the cost secondary to the expertise of the doctor. A qualified surgeon is certified by an accredited organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery or American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: Too Expensive

With recent advancements in cosmetic surgery, procedures are not only safer, but also more affordable. This is partly attributed to the ability to fore go the traditional hospital setting. Many cosmetic surgery procedures can now be safely conducted in a surgeon’s outpatient facility.

There is also a growing number of minimally invasive and non-surgical cosmetic surgery options that are quite affordable. Additionally, many surgeons offer financing through specific lenders. The cost for cosmetic surgery is now more manageable with monthly payments.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: For Women Only

The rate of men turning to cosmetic surgery is continually on the rise. With competition in the workplace and dating world, men are equally concerned with appearance as women. The top cosmetic surgical procedures requested by men are nose reshaping, hair transplantation and liposuction. Men also choose from non-surgical offerings, such as Botox, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: Liposuction is for Weight Loss

Liposuction is primarily a body contouring method. It should not be used as a weight loss tool. The best candidates for liposuction are healthy and close to ideal weight, with stubborn pockets of fat proven unresponsive to exercise and dieting.

Common Misconceptions: Cosmetic Surgery Looks Plastic

Recent developments in cosmetic surgery all point to natural-looking results. Many surgeons are committed to enhancement or improvement, rather than drastic change. Pictures of women with abnormally large breast augmentations and wind-blown facelifts are not the norm.

Common Misconceptions About Scars and Cosmetic Surgery

Medical advancements have led to increased precision and smaller incisions. A number of cosmetic surgery procedures can be performed endoscopically, reducing the risk of scars. The endoscopic method is performed with a tiny camera that assists with navigation during surgery. Even in cases of open surgery, many incisions can now be placed in areas that are more difficult to detect.

Gastric Banding Surgery Top 5 Secrets Of A Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Operation

Many overweight and morbidly obese people have endured a lifetime of low self esteem, zero confidence and increased health problems.

Most have suffered in silence and have retreated into their own comfort zone refusing to socialise and dreading the holiday period.

Many patients fall victim to bouts of depression, binge eating and agoraphobia. In many cases they retreat into a life devoid of social activity with friends and family members.

Just as laser eye treatment has changed the lives of millions of patients with poor eye sight, gastric banding surgery or a Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding operation is changing the lives of thousands of overweight patients.

Not only is this band surgery delivering staggering success results, but it’s also performed privately at an affordable cost.

Criteria for having a gastric banding operation performed by the National Health Service in the UK is so rigorous that few overweight or morbidly obese patients receive a free band operation.

Many of the problems surrounding these rigorous National Health criteria for surgery are dictated from the fact that most health regions in the UK are run by Regional Medical Trusts.

All have different criteria for medical treatments. They appear to be more concerned with cutting costs and monitoring their budgets, than being concerned about the welfare of overweight and morbidly obese patients.

This in itself is very hypercritical when one considers the costs to the National Health from medical illnesses and issues directly attributable to patients being overweight or morbidly obese.

The cost for band surgery in the UK is often double that when performed by a UK medical board registered surgeon operating privately in a hospital in Belgium.

Quite obviously band surgery is not the cure for every overweight or morbidly obese patient, but it does deliver a staggeringly high success rate by achieving approximately a 50% loss of excess weight for most patients in 2 years.

Given this information one can only wonder how long it will take for the bean counters of these regional health trusts to understand that paying approximately £4,000 for a morbidly obese patient to have a band operation, will deliver huge medical savings post operation for these patients.

It’s a sad fact of life that most overweight and morbidly obese patients have to suffer ill health, physical pain and psychological torture from being overweight, simply because they can’t afford to pay for a Laparoscopic adjustable banding operation.

Surgery After Weight Loss And Body Lift Procedures

In the United States today, approximately 31% of the population (59 million people) is obese, defined as roughly 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight. Nearly 65% of the US population is considered either obese or overweight, defined as weighing 10 to 30 pounds over a healthy weight. Numerous health problems can arise as a result of obesity, including diabetes, heart disease, and many others.  There are a variety of ways to achieve weight loss, all starting with the self commitment to improve how we both look and feel.  A proper balanced, healthful diet combined with regular exercise is the cornerstone of weight loss and achieving health and fitness.  Surgical procedures, known as bariatric surgery, surgery for weight loss, or obesity surgery, can also be performed.

After the tremendous achievement of weight loss, and particularly massive weight loss, many people are troubled by the excess loose and sagging skin and fat that remains.  The wonderful accomplishment of weight loss is often, and unfortunately, counterbalanced by the excess of the body, arms, and thighs that are both unsightly and symptomatic.  Thankfully, there are treatments that reduce or remove the excess skin and fat after weight loss, allowing people to truly reach their goals of both feeling and looking better.

The “body lift” describes a series of procedures that are tailored to the individual’s needs after massive weight loss. The Lower Body Lift, the Upper Body Lift, and the Thigh Lift are all body lift procedures that can be performed after extreme weight loss.

The Upper Body Lift removes excess skin and fat from the arms, underarms, chest, breast, and back.  Thigh Lifts remove excess skin and fat from inner thighs, and often outer thighs, and knees.  Every individual’s distribution of excess skin and fat, and their particular desires, are unique, and the different body lift “tools” can be tailored with the appropriate body lift procedure to satisfy one’s particular goals.

Lower Body Lift

The Lower Body Lift removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen, thighs, flanks, and back, while also tightening the torso and lifting the buttocks and thighs.  It is also known as a circumferential abdominoplasty, or dermolipectomy.  Liposuction is often performed as well.  Not only can excess skin and fat be removed with this body lift procedure, but the body can be contoured and “sculpted” to improve appearances dramatically.  This body lift surgery often requires an overnight stay in the hospital.

Upper Body Lifts

The Upper Body Lift can incorporate arm lift (brachioplasty), breast lift (mastopexy), and removal of excess skin and fat from the side of the chest wall and back.  Breast enlargement (breast augmentation with breast implants, or augmentation mastopexy) can also be performed should the individual desire. This type of body lift surgery is most often performed as an ambulatory procedure.

Thigh Lifts

Thigh Lifts remove excess skin and fat from inner thighs, and often outer thighs, and knees, and may incorporate the Lower Body Lift incisions. A Lower Body Lift is most often performed before the Thigh Lift.

Is a Body Lift Right For Me?

Body Lift surgery is only performed after you have reached a weight loss “plateau”.  It is important that nutrition and health are optimum prior to body lift surgery.  Once these are achieved, after thorough consultation with your plastic surgeon the specific body lift procedure and combination of techniques will be selected for your particular needs.

Dr Kolker, MD is a board certified plastic surgeon in New York city specializing in body lift procedures with advanced plastic surgery techniques.
