Every year, more than 50 million Americans try a new diet. According to estimates, nearly two-thirds of all U.S. adults are overweight. Fortunately, many people are able to win the battle of the bulge and lose excess pounds through diet, exercise or gastric bypass surgery. While this is great for health and self-confidence, many people are then left with loose, sagging skin. What can people do to remove this excess skin? Body contouring treatments are one of the most popular solutions, providing a safe and effective solution for many people.

However, no plastic surgery is without risks. Before you decide if body contouring is right for you, consider both the potential risks and benefits of this treatment. By understanding how the surgery works, the results you can expect and the possible side effects, you’ll be better prepared to make the decision that is right for your health, lifestyle and needs.

The Advantages of Body Contouring Treatments

The biggest benefit of having body contouring surgery is the ability to regain a firmer, more youthful appearance. Individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, people entering middle age and women who have had children can especially benefit from body contouring treatments. By eliminating excessive skin and fat, surgeons can help patients improve their appearance and body confidence.

Body contouring can be performed on many different areas of the body, which gives patients the freedom to choose which option is right for their needs and goals. The abdomen, arms, buttocks, lower body and breasts are all areas where body contouring can be used to sculpt, shape, lift and tighten the body. Some patients choose a combination of two or more procedures, while others opt for a total body lift.

Potential Risks of Body Contouring Treatments

In addition to considering what you may gain by having body contouring surgery, you should also consider the possible risks and complications. While this procedure is regarded as safe by doctors, all surgery carries some risk. Some of the possible complications associated with body contouring procedures include blood clots, excessive bleeding and infection. Depending on where or how the surgery is performed, patients may also experience scarring. This scarring often fades over a period of months, but some people may require additional surgery to minimize scarring and remove scar tissue.

Any type of cosmetic plastic surgery comes with both benefits and possible risks. Before you decide if body contouring is right for you, spend some time carefully reviewing your goals. Always keep realistic expectations in order to get the most out of your plastic surgery experience. Spend some time discussing your options with your doctor in order to determine if you are a candidate.

Your surgeon may recommend another procedure such as facial plastic surgery. Remember that the key to a successful plastic surgery is to be physically and psychologically prepared. By understanding the risks and benefits of cosmetic plastic surgery, you?ll be better able to determine if this is right for you.

Body Wraps at Home to Spot Reduce Size, Cellulite

These days, we have so many beauty and spa treatments available for us to do on our own at home, that we don’t even have to leave our homes any more to tighten and tone our skin, get a quick microdermabrasion treatment, and even treat our skin to a soft light laser session for rejuvenation.

Those are just a few examples of products and services that were only offered as a salon or spa service before innovative companies came out with products you could use safely in your own home that gave you comparable results for a fraction of the cost and the convenience of not even leaving your home.

A beauty treatment that has been around for quite a few years but just now is starting to generate buzz for it’s body sculpting capabilities is the body wrap.

Body wraps were made popular as a way to temporarily spot reduce fat and to help trim size off the circumference of typical body omplaints on women and men – their bellies, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms, and evolved into somewhat of a regular treatment for many who swear by it’s detoxification abilities and their great affinity for spot reducing size as well as the appearance of that thing we all hate, cellulite.

Body wraps started off as a pampering beauty appointment for those that could afford things beyond the expensive haircut and coloring on occasion, since they usually went for anywhere from fifty to one hundred dollars per appointment. Add that up and you have quite a costly beauty habit!

Now, thanks to the innovation of a few companies offering at home body wrap treatments, we can do a body wrap on ourselves, in our own home, on our own time and in privacy and comfort. There are a few excellent kits being sold mostly online now that can really give you that smooth, toned, smaller look on your problem areas just like the in-salon treatments can do.

Body wraps done at home are a simple way to help trim a few inches off over a few days or weeks with repeated use if you are anticipating a big life event, say you’re in a wedding, going on a big date, or you have a high school reunion to attend, these are the times that many people seek out body wraps so they can spot reduce their trouble areas without actually dieting or killing themselves exercising to do it.

Home body wrap systems often work by the user applying some sort of herbal botanical concoction to the area they want to treat first. These special herbal mixtures may contain any combination of tightening and toning ingredients such as seaweed, caffeine and other ingredients that tend to help reduce water retention and encourage the smoothing out of the skin.

These kits then supply you with some sort of a wrapping devices, such as thin strips of wrap material that look similar to an ace bandage, which you then use to tightly wrap the area you are treating after you have applied the (usually herbal) formula.

These techniques provide size reduction and cellulite smoothing as well and tone improvement in the affected areas by using compression as well as the ingredients in the topical cream or serum to really force the fat cells to compress together, creating a smoother, leaner look, and often even temporarily reducing the size by “training” the tissue to stay smaller and tighter for a period of time.

Often times once you can achieve the desired outcome after doing several treatments, you only have to do upkeep treatments after that to maintain the look you want. Note that body wraps both at home and at a salon are not designed for actual weight loss, they only make the body parts they are applied to appear smaller, but they usually do not cause the individual to lose weight, only size. Any weight loss should be viewed as a bonus.

Liposuction and Smart Lipo Fat Removal Procedures

We all know that no matter how fit we are, how good our diet is, there’s always that stubborn bit of fat that won’t go away!

The pockets of fat that we’ve tried so hard to get rid of by dieting, exercise and the like, commonly form around the hips, thighs and tummy, wont go away no matter how hard you try? Fat removal procedures such as LipoSuction are now commonly used to remove those unwanted friends, or should I say enemies!

Liposuction is normally performed under general anaesthetic and usually requires only an overnight stay at the hospital. This procedure involves a number of small incisions where a small hollow tube called a cannula; this is then attached to a vacuum pressure unit and guided by the surgeon any unwanted fat is sucked away.

Smart Lipo is a new laser fat removing procedure and is perfect for smaller areas of the body such as jaw line, jowls and tummy as well as inner and outer thigh’s. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is normally complete in around one to two hours with you leaving around thirty minutes after the treatment is finished so no overnight stays!

Results normally depend on the amount of fat in the area being treated and improvements are normally seen within approximately 6 weeks of Smart Lipo treatment and final results in 4 months.

As with any medical procedure there are some risks but complications are infrequent. The surgeon will discuss these with you at your consultation.

Both of these procedures are available from a reputable company I have read a lot about called SurgiCare. They deal with many other forms of cosmetic surgery and cosmetic treatments and have performed many liposuction and Smart Lipo procedures.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery

, ,

Recent developments in the field of cosmetic surgery have led to growing societal acceptance. Still, common misconceptions about cosmetic surgery continue to proliferate our view. The following addresses common myths about cosmetic surgery in an endeavor to develop a better understanding for its practice.

There is No Difference Between Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery falls under a category of plastic surgery. The name plastic surgery was coined in reference to the Greek term “plastikos,” which means to shape. Plastic surgery is also reconstructive. Both cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery achieve similar goals through restoring confidence and improving appearance.

Any Surgeon Can Perform Cosmetic Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon is a doctor in a specialized field. Additionally, many cosmetic surgeons specialize in a specific area of that field. Some surgeons may have better expertise in breast augmentation, while others focus on facial plastic surgery.

Just as with all doctors, choose your cosmetic surgeon carefully. Consider the cost secondary to the expertise of the doctor. A qualified surgeon is certified by an accredited organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery or American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: Too Expensive

With recent advancements in cosmetic surgery, procedures are not only safer, but also more affordable. This is partly attributed to the ability to fore go the traditional hospital setting. Many cosmetic surgery procedures can now be safely conducted in a surgeon’s outpatient facility.

There is also a growing number of minimally invasive and non-surgical cosmetic surgery options that are quite affordable. Additionally, many surgeons offer financing through specific lenders. The cost for cosmetic surgery is now more manageable with monthly payments.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: For Women Only

The rate of men turning to cosmetic surgery is continually on the rise. With competition in the workplace and dating world, men are equally concerned with appearance as women. The top cosmetic surgical procedures requested by men are nose reshaping, hair transplantation and liposuction. Men also choose from non-surgical offerings, such as Botox, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Common Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery: Liposuction is for Weight Loss

Liposuction is primarily a body contouring method. It should not be used as a weight loss tool. The best candidates for liposuction are healthy and close to ideal weight, with stubborn pockets of fat proven unresponsive to exercise and dieting.

Common Misconceptions: Cosmetic Surgery Looks Plastic

Recent developments in cosmetic surgery all point to natural-looking results. Many surgeons are committed to enhancement or improvement, rather than drastic change. Pictures of women with abnormally large breast augmentations and wind-blown facelifts are not the norm.

Common Misconceptions About Scars and Cosmetic Surgery

Medical advancements have led to increased precision and smaller incisions. A number of cosmetic surgery procedures can be performed endoscopically, reducing the risk of scars. The endoscopic method is performed with a tiny camera that assists with navigation during surgery. Even in cases of open surgery, many incisions can now be placed in areas that are more difficult to detect.

Have a Consultation for Cosmetic Surgery

Deciding whether cosmetic surgery is right for you is a personal decision. Make an informed decision by consulting a qualified surgeon about the benefits and limitations. For assistance locating an experienced cosmetic surgeon, visit DocShop.com.

Cosmetic procedures are now much more common than they were 10 years ago. Spanning from gastric bypass surgery to laser hair removal , cosmetic surgery is readily available to the public. These procedures are helping restore self-confidence and pride to millions of people across the world.

Trouble Spots Only-Why Liposuction for Weight Loss Is a Bad Idea

If you are overweight or obese, you may be looking for the easy way out. You might think that you have tried almost everything diet, exercise, weight loss pills if you are running out of options, you are probably frustrated and ready to consider just about anything.

Many overweight or obese people think that liposuction for weight loss is the perfect solution to their problem. After all, they think, all you have to do is go in for a simple liposuction for weight loss procedure and when you walk out, all the fat will be gone. There are several qualifications that make someone a good candidate for liposuction.

Many people think that a good candidate for liposuction is someone who needs to lose ten or fifteen pounds, but the opposite is actually true. This is why liposuction for weight loss is not a good idea.

Why Not Me?

If you are overweight or obese and were considering getting liposuction for weight loss performed, you may be wondering-why not me? Well, there is one main reason why liposuction is generally performed on people of a normal weight with a few trouble spots. These people generally have firm skin, unlike people who are overweight. Because the liposuction procedure is most successful on people who have firm skin, doctors generally recommend that people who are overweight or obese do not have liposuction for weight loss performed.

They are not likely to see the same results as people of normal weight; their surgery will most likely result in loose, baggy skin. This can lead to other medical problems.Overall, liposuction for weight loss is a bad idea because liposuction is a shaping procedure, not a weight loss procedure. However, anyone considering liposuction or liposuction for weight loss should consult their doctor before having any kind of surgery performed.

The doctor will be able to tell you all the risks associated with liposuction for weight loss and give you a better projection of the results you might see. Who knows-perhaps you are an ideal candidate after all.

Zerona Non – Invasive Body Contouring At Anew Aesthetic Medical Center

Dr. Vicky Hagstrom, owner and operator of ANew Aesthetic Medical Center, is proud to now offer Zerona non-invasive body contouring. Zerona is a new and revolutionary body slimming laser that offers individuals a solution without dieting or exercise. It is the first non-invasive body contouring procedure to effectively remove excess fat with a low-energy laser that is applied externally to the patient’s skin without the dangers associated with surgery or other non-invasive devices which rely on heating the tissue.

Through clinical studies, it has been demonstrated that the Zerona low-level laser stimulates the fat cell to liquefy the fat within the cell. Then the liquefied fat moves from inside the cell through a temporary pore formed in the cell membrane to outside the cell where it is in the interstitial space until absorbed by the lymphatic system. This results in millions of fat cells becoming smaller so inches are reduced off the waist, hips and thighs. This revolutionary method does not injure the fat cells in any way and provides results without the dangers associated with surgery, while at the same time allowing patients to remain active during treatment.

The Zerona protocol utilizes Erchonia®’s patented and clinically proven low-level laser technology to target adipose tissue (aka: fat storing cells) and stimulate the fat cells to liquefy and secrete their fat stores. Voluminous adipose tissue can appear when fatty material is present, and this, in turn, can bring about enlarged subcutaneous fat regions. Because subcutaneous fat is close to the skin’s surface, laser emulsification can have a dramatic effect and can result in millions of fat cells becoming smaller and thus inches on fat lost.

In contrast to many weight loss surgeries, the Zerona laser treatment is a 100% non-invasive treatment that uses a low level laser applied externally to stimulate the fat cell and emulsify and release fat. There is no use of anesthesia, nor any pain, gels, creams, numbing agents, needles and no downtime or bruises and scarring. Thus, it is considered a safe alternative to invasive procedures such as tumescent liposuction and lipodissolve and other non-invasive devices like the Accent, VelaShape, and Thermage which use heat and causes discomfort. During the treatment you will feel no discomfort, no anesthesia will be used and you can assume normal activities immediately following each treatment. For more information, Dr. Vicky Hagstrom can answer your questions and consult with you. Please call ANew Aesthetic Medical Center at (612)208-0741, or please visit http://www.downtownskin.com to set up an appointment.

Dr. Hagstrom, a native of Minnesota, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from St. Cloud State University where she was voted one of ten outstanding students in her graduating class. She is a Mayo trained physician with Board Certification in Family Medicine and has received extensive training and experience providing quality medical care and aesthetic procedures, including antiaging skin care, laser science, and follicular unit extraction hair transplant.

Body Sculpting With Liposuction

Dr. Lutgardo C. Caparas Jr., is unlike any sculptor you’ve met. He doesn’t use a chisel or file to carve marble, wood or stone figures. Neither does he dabble in plaster, clay or wax.

Instead, he works with a thin tube or cannula and a vacuum pump at the Dermclinic Surgi-Laser Center in Manila. As a specialist in liposuction, he “carves” real people and his subjects are living works of art.

“Liposuction is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted fat. It’s a very common plastic surgery procedure just like rhinoplasty (a nose lift). A lot of people want to feel and look good and they can have that with liposuction. This involves body contouring which is why the procedure is also called lipoplasty or body sculpturing,” explained Caparas, a Fellow of the Philippine College of Surgeons.

If you think only women are interested in liposuction, think again. While Caparas admits that most of his patients are women, some men consult him about the procedure.

“That’s not surprising since liposuction is usually done in combination with other surgical procedures such as abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck. Age really doesn’t matter. I get patients as young as 18 and as old as 60,” he revealed.

What can liposuction do for you? Caparas said it can restore your curves and shape your body faster than exercise.

“It has an immediate effect. Fat that’s resistant to exercise can be removed in a flash. You can get rid of fat from the areas you like. For people who spend a lot of time in the gym sweating it out, they’d be surprised how fast they can lose fat with liposuction,” said Caparas who trained at four hospitals – the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, the Makati Medical Center, the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, and Rizal Medical Center.

Who will benefit most from liposuction? Caparas said the procedure does wonders for young people with abdominal fat and good skin. Poor candidates are those with wrinkled or loose skin since this tends to get worse with liposuction.

“In some cases, elderly patients will get good results provided they have good skin over the area to be suctioned and fatty deposits in the pubic area, the thigh, and flank or in places where it shouldn’t be. Ideally, a good patient is one who is 10 – 20 percent overweight. However, liposuction should never be performed in morbidly obese patients or in those with underlying medical conditions. For people over 35, I require blood tests and other laboratory exams,” Caparas said.

Although liposuction can be done anywhere, Caparas said best results are obtained in the abdominal area. The most difficult part is thigh liposuction since results vary in this area.

“How long you stay in the clinic depends on the skill of the surgeon and the area to be treated. Liposuction can take less than an hour or 12 hours at the most. For small areas like the lower abdomen or chin, local anesthesia is used,” Caparas said.

Of course, liposuction isn’t permanent. You will always become fat if you don’t exercise and eat healthy meals. Smart Lipo – Smarter for Stubborn Fatty Areas Than Liposuction

Fat. It’s part of the human condition. It accumulates under our skin, especially as we get older, right where we don’t want it. Diet and exercise can really help, and they’re good for our general health, too, so they’re the first line of attack against overweight. But sometimes even the high-power gym types, the folks who work out all the time, simply can’t get rid of those lumpy, fatty areas. That’s why a lot of people are interested in a new treatment they’re hearing about called “Smart Lipo.”

What is Smart Lipo? It’s laser liposuction, and it’s a radical advance in “body sculpting” for fatty areas.

I had a client call me the other day about this new treatment – “Is it right for me?” she asked. She is a very fit, active middle-aged mother of three children in college and beyond. “It’s driving me crazy,” she said – “my weenie roll.” What? Saddlebags, love handles, OK, but – what was this?

Turns out that’s what she calls a roll of fat across her lower abdomen, about the size and shape of a ballpark frankfurter. You see, though that part of her is in very good tone, she has a C-section scar like a smile right there, and her pregnancies have loosened her skin just enough that fat accumulates above the scar. She hates the way it makes the front of her pants, not to mention her swimsuit, bulge out.

She doesn’t want a tummy tuck. That would really be overkill, and who wants general anesthesia if you don’t need it? Liposuction… I don’t know if you’ve seen this procedure on TV, but again, there’s general anesthesia, and then all that shoving of the suction equipment – it can even be dangerous in the wrong hands! And it leaves the surface of the loosened skin with grooves and ripples – far from smooth.

So she came in for an exam and consultation, and I explained Smart Lipo to her. It’s a minimally invasive procedure, done in the office under local anesthesia. Here’s the great advance: it uses laser energy that targets the fat cells – and literally melts them away! They are then withdrawn with super-fine tubes. The laser energy also seals off fine blood vessels, drastically reducing blood leakage and bruising in the tissues – and there’s no stitches or scarring. This procedure also stimulates collagen production and causes a tightening of the skin over the area, another benefit over regular liposuction. After the procedure, you wear a compression garment for a week or two. And that’s it!

Smart Lipo is a very gentle, comfortable, low-pain procedure, highly efficient, without all the bulky tubes and vacuum apparatus of the older liposuction procedure. The treatment itself is brief, and down time is also much less, usually a day or two as opposed to a week. Many patients see the results they want after a single treatment.

“Is it safe?” my client wanted to know. Very safe. Smart Lipo has been in widespread use for several years in Europe and South America, and the FDA approved it here in the US over a year ago.

That’s what I told my client about Smart Lipo, and here’s what I want everyone else to know: It is the answer for so many of the fat problems that drive us crazy: besides love handles and saddlebags, the tummy fat, arms and thigh fat, jowls and neck and under the chin fat, back fat, and male chest fat (yes, I am talking about man boobs). So this is a perfect treatment for my client and her abdominal fat, and for anyone looking to remove limited amounts of fat in targeted areas, up to about eight pounds. Anyone desiring to remove more fat than this will want to discuss one of the other procedures with a cosmetic dermatologist or other professional specialist.

But aren’t we lucky to live at a time when technology is giving us such a great, individualized, smart alternative for getting rid of pesky fat?
